Tour de France 2025: Is Primoz Roglic Truly Committed?

Primož Roglič, the four-time Grand Tour champion, has taken a different approach to the 2025 Tour de France, with a notable change in attitude that has left many questioning his motivation.

At the start of the race, Roglič downplayed his chances, stating that he doesn't care much about doing well in the Tour de France. This indifferent attitude was unexpected, especially given his impressive track record, which includes almost 100 race victories and five Grand Tour titles.

However, Roglič's comments may have been a justifiable explanation for his apparent apathy. He was playing catch-up to be fit for the Tour de France after abandoning the Giro d'Italia due to injury.

Despite his initial approach, Roglič has shown renewed competitive spirit. He mentioned that he would never give up on a stage win if he has the legs for it, and his efforts were evident as he finished in eighth place overall.

Roglič's team, Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe, has expressed concern about his comments but remains supportive. They view Roglič as a valuable member of their roster through 2025, acknowledging his changing role and ambitions within the team.

Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe is preparing to integrate rising stars Remco Evenepoel and Florian Lipowitz into the squad in 2026. However, the team's management respects Roglič's efforts and decisions during the Tour and has adjusted his racing program accordingly, showing a willingness to support his aims.

After five stages, Roglič is 2:30 off the leader, Tadej Pogacar, in the General Classification. Team director Jens Aldag remains optimistic, stating that if they maintain the current 2:30 gap after the next four stages, everything is still possible. Aldag continues to target a podium finish in the Tour de France as their main goal.

Roglič finished 32 seconds adrift to Pogacar on stage four, a result that shows his determination to compete despite the challenges he has faced. He stated that he puts everything out on the road day after day, and the results will show at the end.

As the Tour de France progresses, it will be interesting to see how Roglič's approach evolves and whether he can regain his form to challenge for the overall victory.
