Green Party Quizzes Senate Over Stricter Police Law Details

In a bold move, the Berlin Greens have served up 85 questions aimed at Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) of the Interior Ministry. The inquiry centers around the proposed stricter police law, which is set to undergo review in the House of Representatives' Interior Committee. Green Party interior politico, Vasili Franco, is championing for answers to his extensive list of queries, raising concerns about the law's potential challenges in the Constitutional Court due to constitutional concerns.

The draft bill, known as the Security and Order Act (ASOG), proposes numerous changes, including the allowance for police officers to film select operations with integrated bodycams in situations that could escalate. Moreover, stun guns, which have been undergoing testing, would be more widely used by law enforcement. Furthermore, the bill seeks to extend the maximum duration of preventive detention from two to five days.

Franco's queries focus primarily on the deployment of bodycams, stun guns, and the instigation of preventive custody. The concerns extend to the implications of free parking spaces for police officers and other emergency services near their workplaces.

The recent expert hearing revealed a need for substantial adjustments, as Franco pointed out. The draft law, however, provokes more questions than it provides answers. Moreover, the Green Party and data protection commissioner's concerns have not been adequately addressed, which Franco asserted, could pose problems for upholding the rule of law if the CDU and SPD overlook these criticisms.

In light of the potential challenges, the Green Party is urging Senator Iris Spranger to address their 85 questions pertaining to bodycams, stun guns, and preventive custody within the proposed stricter police law. The Berlin Senate's responses to these concerns remain to be seen, with the Senate under scrutiny for its underattention to the experts and data protection commissioner's reservations about the law.
