Tough Day at the Open Championship: Despite some off-target shots, McIlroy persists and fights through a challenging round

**The 153rd Open Championship Kicks Off with a Competitive First Round**

The 153rd Open Championship, held at the picturesque Royal Portrush in 2025, has commenced with a thrilling first day of play. The challenging conditions and the competitive field have set the stage for an exciting tournament.

## Notable Performances and Results

Five players are sharing the lead after the first round, each shooting a four-under-par 67. The group includes Jacob Skov Olesen, Haotong Li, Matt Fitzpatrick, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, and Harris English. Scottie Scheffler, the World No.1, finished one shot back, while Justin Rose trails by two strokes. Rory McIlroy, despite a rocky start, managed to recover and finish three shots off the lead.

McIlroy, a local favourite, faced pressure due to the support of the home country and the expectations. However, he showed resilience, improving his performance compared to the 2019 Open at Portrush, where he scored a 79 in the first round. This time around, he shot a 1-under 70, a significant improvement of nine strokes.

Tyrrell Hatton, who found the conditions "tricky," managed to shoot a three-under 68. Other notable performers include Brian Harman, Jon Rahm, Shane Lowry, and Xander Schauffele, who are all well-placed after the first round.

## Conditions

The first day of the tournament was marked by heavy rain showers and strong winds, making the course challenging for all competitors. The wind and rain made rounds take six hours to complete. Tyrrell Hatton commented on the slow pace of play, saying it felt like he couldn't eat enough.

Despite the challenging conditions, only two players managed to complete the round without a bogey: Haotong Li and Justin Rose. McIlroy returned to under-par on the 17th hole with a superb approach shot. However, he suffered back-to-back bogeys on the 11th and 12th holes and made another bogey on the 14th hole. He made birdies on the second, fifth, seventh, and tenth holes, but his round was challenging due to having to chop out of the rough or fairway bunkers.

McIlroy, who felt he dealt with the pressure better than he did six years ago, made an important par save on the 15th hole. Frustration was evident among players, as shown by McIlroy's puffing of cheeks, Scheffler's club drop, and Jon Rahm's anger. Marc Leishman felt he had been on the course for 12 hours due to the slow pace.

The 153rd Open is being held on the Dunluce links, a course that has tested the best golfers in the world. As the tournament progresses, it is expected that the competition will become even more intense, with players battling the challenging conditions and their own nerves to claim the coveted Claret Jug.
