Tottenham Hotspur steal Paris Saint-Germain's transfer deal with a shocking proposition, claims a recent report.
Tottenham Hotspur's Pursuit of Ilya Zabarnyi Falls Short as Defender Joins Paris Saint-Germain
In a surprising turn of events, Tottenham Hotspur's bid to sign Bournemouth's defender Ilya Zabarnyi has come to an end, with the Ukrainian international joining Paris Saint-Germain instead.
According to reports, PSG have secured Zabarnyi's services for a significant transfer fee, estimated to be around 67 to 68 million euros. This follows PSG's rejection of Bournemouth's initial offers, which were said to be around €60m.
Gianluca Di Marzio reported that Tottenham Hotspur had shown interest in Zabarnyi, but the defender himself is said to prefer Paris Saint-Germain over Spurs at this time. The London club, however, made an audacious offer for Zabarnyi, following their acquisition of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United for £55m.
Despite this setback, Tottenham Hotspur's chairman, Daniel Levy, is still keen on bolstering the squad's defensive options for Thomas Frank's first season in charge. The club currently boasts a well-stocked defense, with players such as Kevin Danso, Radu Dragusin, Ben Davies, and young talents like Luka Vuskovic, Ashley Phillips, and Kota Takai.
Last season, injuries forced Archie Gray, a midfielder by trade, to fill in for the defense. However, with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero's substantial absences, it seems that Tottenham no longer have a significant problem in the defense department that requires a €70m solution.
According to Transfermarkt, Ilya Zabarnyi's current market value is approximately €42m, but recent estimates from the CIES Football Observatory suggest a higher value range of €65-76 million euros.
While the pursuit of Zabarnyi might have been a missed opportunity for Tottenham Hotspur, the club remains active in the transfer market, looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
