Torres requests confirmation regarding the authenticity of the signed agenda amidst claims that 200 million euros are unaccounted for during the funding of La Palma.
In a recent address, the Minister of Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, acknowledged the challenging anniversary of the eruption in La Palma and expressed his sympathy for the affected residents.
Torres confirmed that a significant economic injection has been made to support the affected farmers, with a substantial sum coming from the Ministry of Agriculture. He also assured that commitments to farmers will be fulfilled.
In response to complaints about the reconstruction of Las Palmas, the Minister clarified that a decree-law will be approved in 2025 to establish the legislative mechanism for the IRPF reduction on La Palma, as part of the Canarian Agenda signed in the summer of 2023. This agenda includes a 60% reduction in IRPF for the years 2025, 2026, and 2027.
The Minister also stated that the maximum possible has been done to repair the material damage and will continue to be done within the possibilities of the central government. He invited those who claim the missing 100 million euros to check the Canarian Agenda to verify if the claimed amount is included or not.
However, no new fact was mentioned about the missing 100 million euros from the budget. The Minister emphasised the need for clarity and asked to avoid giving false hopes to those who do not have them.
Torres also announced that he will convene the mixed commission again within two weeks to discuss the reconstruction progress, difficulties, and contributions. He is open to sitting down with the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of La Palma to agree on necessary improvements.
In addition, affected Palmer farmers have been given moratoriums regarding their mortgage obligations to ease the burden of the eruption's aftermath. The Minister expressed his gratitude for the resilience shown by the people of La Palma and reiterated his commitment to supporting them in their recovery.
