Thunderstorms and Rough Seas Hit Thailand's North, Northeast, Southwest, and Coastal Regions

The weather across Thailand, influenced by the southwest monsoon, is causing thundershowers and rough sea conditions. Here's the lowdown on what you need to know.

Monsoon-induced ConditionsThe southwest monsoon is currently dominating over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, resulting in increased rainfall across the country. Expect scattered thundershowers and isolated heavy rains, particularly in the North, Northeast, East, and South (West Coast) regions. Temperatures will range from 26°C to 36°C, with regional variations. For instance, Bangkok's maximum temperatures are forecasted around 34-36°C, while minimums are expected to be around 26-28°C.

The monsoon strengthening is likely to cause more frequent and intense rain showers, including heavy to very heavy rains in some areas, especially in the southern and eastern provinces. A low-pressure system over upper Vietnam is further intensifying rainfall in the East, upper Northeast, and Southwest coast. There is a potential for localized flooding due to the heavy rain.

Sea ConditionsThe winds in the Andaman Sea are southwesterly at speeds of 10–20 km/h, with waves expected to be around 1-2 meters high, occasionally exceeding 2 meters during thundershowers. The Gulf of Thailand is expected to have waves about 1 meter high, sometimes above 2 meters in stormy conditions. Mariners must exercise caution, and small boats, particularly in the upper Andaman Sea, are recommended to remain ashore due to the strong monsoon winds and wave heights.

These conditions are typical of the southwest monsoon season in Thailand, affecting both land and marine activities across the region.

Expect Thundershowers in These Areas- North: Scattered thundershowers mainly in Mae Hong Son, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Tak, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, and Phetchabun.- Northeast: Scattered thundershowers mainly in Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, and Ubon Ratchathani.- Central: Isolated thundershowers mainly in Lopburi, Saraburi, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Songkhram, and Samut Sakhon.- East: Scattered thundershowers mainly in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat.- South (east coast): Scattered thundershowers mainly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat.- South (west coast): Scattered thundershowers mainly in Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Krabi.- Bangkok metropolitan area: Scattered thundershowers mainly in the afternoon to evening.
