Borussia Dortmund and Juventus Turin Play Out Thrilling 4-4 Draw in Champions League Opener
In a thrilling encounter, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus Turin played out a dramatic 4-4 draw in the Champions League season opener.
Gregor Kobel, Dortmund's goalkeeper, was put to the test early on, saving a shot by Khephren Thuram in the 4th minute. The hosts, Juventus, increasingly went on the offensive in the second half, but Kobel was not tested again.
Dortmund took the lead in the 52nd minute when Karim Adeyemi scored, followed by Felix Nmecha's goal in the 65th minute to make it 2-0. However, Juventus fought back, with Kenan Yildiz equalizing in the 63rd minute and Dusan Vlahovic scoring twice, in the 68th and 90+4 minutes, to take a 4-2 lead.
Ramy Bensebaini scored for Dortmund in the 86th minute to set up a tense final few minutes, but Juventus held on to secure a point. Maximilian Beier hit the post from a very tight angle before Adeyemi's goal, and Loïs Openda had a shot that didn't cause any problems for Kobel.
Juventus showed some nice passing moves going forward and earned several corners, but Dortmund's defence held firm. Guirassy had a chance to make it 2-0 for Dortmund but failed from close range against Juve keeper Michele Di Gregorio.
Substitute Dusan Vlahovic scored the 2-2 for Juventus, and Openda was involved in the first scene of the second half with a nice backheel in the Dortmund penalty area. Yan Couto scored twice for Dortmund, exploiting a defensive error in the 74th minute to make it 3-2, and again in the 90+6 minute to equalize at 4-4.
In the end, both teams will be disappointed not to have taken all three points, but the fans were treated to a memorable game of football. Borussia Dortmund and Juventus Turin will meet again in the group stages of the Champions League, with both teams looking to secure a place in the knockout stages.
