Torrential rains from hurricane remnants pose a threat to the Swiss Alps, potentially causing floods and landslides.
The Alps are bracing for an unusual weather event as Storm Augustin, named by Meteo Suisse, approaches the region. The storm, associated with Hurricane Erin's remnants, is expected to rapidly expand and cool, dumping heavy rain across the Alps and parts of Switzerland and northern Italy.
Meteo France predicts that the storm will also generate a powerful surge of waves along the Bay of Biscay, the Breton coast, and the entrance to the English Channel. These waves are unusual for the time of year and are being driven by unusually strong sea winds.
The heavy rain could trigger mudslides and cause rivers and streams to flood. Rainfall totals in some areas could exceed 260 mm (10 inches). Red alerts have been issued for parts of Ticino and Graubunden in Switzerland, while amber weather alerts have been issued across the region.
The ship and structure owners along the affected coasts, including maritime shipping companies, fishing fleets, port authorities, offshore energy operators, and coastal facility managers in France and Spain, are preparing for the potential impact.
The weather system associated with Erin will also bring heavy rain to a band of Europe, extending from northern Spain, through France, and into southern Germany. This rainfall could exacerbate the ongoing warming of the Alps, which has seen temperatures rise about 2C since the pre-industrial period.
Scientists have long warned that a warming planet is making such weather events more likely. In fact, just three months ago, a Swiss glacier collapsed, destroying most of the Alpine village of Blatten. The collapse was a stark reminder of the potential consequences of climate change.
As the storm approaches, residents and businesses in the affected areas are urged to take precautions and stay informed. The powerful waves are expected to reach 5 meters (16 feet) high by Thursday and Friday, posing a significant threat to infrastructure and safety.
