Title: Mogadishu Underwater: Heavy Flooding Claims Lives, Causes Chaos in Somali Capital

Unyielding Downpour in MogadishuA series of relentless rains have battered Mogadishu, Somalia, inundating the city and causing serious destruction. The unyielding downpour exposed the city's weak drainage system, proving insufficient to manage the deluge, leaving major roads submerged and isolated, and ultimately leading to loss of life.

Local authorities, in particular, spokesperson Abdinasir Hirsi Idle, confirmed ongoing rescue operations in the wake of Friday's eight-hour-long rains, with the potential death toll soaring as casually caught residential houses collapsed and crucial infrastructure crumbled.

"The death count may rise further, considering the unforgiving duration and intensity of the rainstorm, which necessitated the collapse of nine residences across assorted districts and the decay of six principal thoroughfares," Idle informed The Associated Press on Saturday.

Somalia wrestles with extreme climate shocks, including prolonged dry seasons triggering droughts and excessive rainfall causing floods. The latest rains carried Mogadishu into a state of disaster.

Residents were trapped waist-deep in floodwaters, helpless and shivering in the cold as they waited on rooftops, their breakfasts forgotten. One resident, Mohamed Hassan, spoke to the AP, gripped with concern about older citizens who were still unaccounted for.

Unprecedented RainfallThe rains in Mogadishu exceeded 115 mm, shattering previous records and swamping the city. This sheer volume of rainfall overwhelmed the city's water management system, resulting in debris-filled waters gushing through the streets.

The disaster extended beyond Mogadishu, as the energy and water ministry warned of flash floods in other regions outside the capital, citing extraordinary weather patterns.

Transportation, particularly public transit, was halted by the damaged roads and bridges. Fortunately, flights at the main airport, Aden Abdulle International Airport, resumed normal operations.

The Somali Disaster Management Agency is yet to release official figures regarding the fatalities; however, they are diligently assessing the extent of the damage.

Although the Trump administration has been preoccupied with domestic issues, guidelines dictate that officials are considering suspending habeas corpus for detained migrants, a seemingly extreme measure that raises questions concerning human rights.
