Heavy Rains Cause Flooding and Evacuations in Gujarat

Heavy rains battered several coastal districts in Gujarat on Wednesday, causing flooding in low-lying areas and prompting evacuations and rescue operations.

In the district of Junagadh, located in the Saurashtra region of the state, three talukas were particularly affected by the heavy rains. Mendarda taluka recorded 331 mm rainfall in just 12 hours, while several parts of Junagadh experienced very heavy rains.

The NDRF and state unit SDRF teams were mobilised for relief and rescue operations in Junagadh, evacuating 12 persons trapped in low-lying areas at Manewada village. Three persons were rescued at Dataradi village in Amreli district.

Unfortunately, a man died due to a lightning strike in a village in Manavadar, and seven persons were stranded at a temple in Manavadar taluka of Junagadh district.

As many as 46 school children and four teachers were trapped due to flooding at Borasar village in Porbandar district. Instructions were issued to keep schools and colleges shut in view of the heavy rains.

Several dams and rivers started overflowing, causing flooding in low-lying areas of nearby villages. Several approach roads were blocked, and operations of the state transport buses were suspended in the affected areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted extremely heavy rains in Surat, Navsari, Valsad, and Daman and Dadra Nagar Haveli as well as Porbandar, Dwarka, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, and Diu, and heavy to very heavy rains with isolated extremely heavy rains in Devbhumi Dwarka district till Friday morning.

Junagadh collector Anil Ranavasiya said that 52 low-lying villages were put on alert in view of the overflowing dams. The administration launched rescue and relief operations in Porbandar, Navsari, Valsad, and other affected districts.

The cities in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat affected by the heavy rains include Rajkot, Jamnagar, and Junagadh. An upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Gujarat has persisted along with offshore troughs at mean sea level along the Gujarat-Maharashtra coast, the IMD said.

The IMD also predicted more such showers in the next two days. Keshod taluka received 280 mm downpour in the same period. The administration is working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected citizens and to restore normalcy as soon as possible.
