Heavy Weather Alert Across Thailand: Flash Floods, High Waves, and Strong Winds Predicted

Thailand is bracing for heavy weather conditions over the next few days, as the Thai Meteorological Department issues warnings for rain, thundershowers, and strong winds across all 41 provinces.

The forecast, particularly for August 16-18, predicts heavy to very heavy rains, thundershowers, and strong winds, with the southwest monsoon strengthening and a low-pressure cell covering upper Laos and upper Vietnam.

In the Northern Provinces, widespread thundershowers with isolated heavy to very heavy rain are expected in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, Phichit, and Phetchabun. Temperatures range from 22-33°C.

The Northeastern Provinces will see fairly widespread thundershowers and isolated heavy rains in Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani, with temperatures between 22-32°C.

In Central Thailand, fairly widespread thundershowers with isolated heavy rains are anticipated in Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Lopburi, Saraburi, and Kanchanaburi. Temperatures 23-34°C.

The Eastern Provinces are expected to experience fairly widespread thundershowers and heavy to very heavy rains in Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Wave heights near the coast about 2 meters or higher during storms. Temperatures 23-32°C.

The Southern Provinces will continue to be influenced by the strong southwest monsoon, with heavy rains particularly on the west coast and periodic strong winds causing waves in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand up to 2-3 meters, higher during thundershowers. The monsoon trough and a low-pressure cell near the South China Sea intensify rainfall and wind from August 15-18.

The Thai Meteorological Department specifically warns of flash floods, overflows, and localized flooding in hills, low-lying, and riverbank areas due to heavy rain accumulation. Waves in the lower Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf are expected to reach one to two metres.

Residents are advised to be alert for heavy rainfall, potential flash floods, and water accumulation. Maritime activities across the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea are also advised to take the widespread thunderstorms and high waves seriously.

In Bangkok and surrounding areas, scattered thundershowers are expected. Minimum temperatures range from 26-28 °C and maximum temperatures from 34-36 °C.
