Admiring the Red Lake Spectacle: A Steep Challenge

immerse yourself in the jaw-dropping panorama of Imotski's Red Lake, but be prepared for a challenge. Located high up, the lake is surrounded by a towering, crimson-hued cliff, making it a precarious feat to throw a stone into the water below.

The lake gets its name from the red clay-colored rocks that encircle the water, and for centuries, visitors have taken up the tradition of attempting to toss a stone from the brim into the depths. But don't be fooled by appearances - the wide, steep cliffs and the distance to the water make the task more difficult than it seems.

Luckily, the lake's water level is currently at its highest point in living memory. The elevated water level is a result of the region's recent heavy rainfall, which filled the lake, as well as the other 10 Imotski lakes, to overflowing. The Red Lake's water level exceeds 309 meters, offering an ideal opportunity for brave souls to give the stone-tossing challenge a try.

Just months of heavy rainfall has seen the water levels of the 11 Imotski lakes rise significantly. In December 2020, the region recorded approximately 700 liters of rain per square meter, filling the lakes, as well as the river Vrljika.

Currently, the high water levels can be found in Galipovac Lake, Lokvičićko Lake (or Mamić Lake), Prološki lake, Knezović lake, and the Vrljica River. Amongst the 11 Imotski lakes, the Green Lake, known for its beautiful, icy turquoise green appearance, is a popular spot for hikers, walkers, and climbers.

Of special interest is the Blue Lake, the closest to Imotski center, which serves as a popular summertime swimming and recreation site. Today, the water level stands at 91.5 meters, continuing to rise. Whether it will reach the record-breaking 102 meters recorded in 2012 depends on the amount of rainfall in the region in the coming days.

Taking on the Challenge

Imotski-based surveyor Ante Škeva recently measured the water level of the Red Lake as an impressive 309 meters, making it the perfect time to give the stone-throwing challenge a try. Local photographer and writer Braco Cosic, reporting for Slobodna Dalmacija, adds that the region's rainfall patterns not only fill the Red Lake but also provide water to some of the other 11 Imotski lakes through underground channels flowing from Bosnia.
