Heavy Rainfall Forecast for Uttar Pradesh Over the Next Few Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Uttar Pradesh over the next few days, linked to the active monsoon trough currently north of its usual position near the Himalayan foothills. This shift is driving intense rainfall across northern India, including Uttar Pradesh.

Causes

The active phase of the southwest monsoon and the positioning of the monsoon trough northwards near the Himalayas enhance moisture inflow and convection, leading to sustained heavy rainfall. Additional factors include low-pressure areas over the Bay of Bengal and western disturbances influencing northern India’s weather patterns during this period.

Affected Regions in Uttar Pradesh

Rainfall is expected broadly across the state, especially in eastern and central parts. Intermittent heavy showers have been forecast on select days between August 16 and 22, 2025, coinciding with rainfall spells in neighboring northern states such as Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh.

Expected Intensity

The rainfall ranges from heavy to very heavy, occasionally approaching extremely heavy intensities on isolated days. IMD warnings indicate potential for very heavy rainfall episodes, which could result in urban flooding and soil saturation, particularly in vulnerable or low-lying areas.

In the last 24 hours, several districts have recorded significant rainfall: Nighasan (Kheri) with 7 cm, Gonda CWC, Gonda Sadar, Bara Banki, Ballia Observatory, Safipur (Unnao), Basti Observatory each with 5 cm, Colonialganj (Gonda), Fatehpur Tehsil (Barabanki), Birdghat (Gorakhpur), Nakur (Saharanpur), Thakurdwara (Moradabad) each with 6 cm, and Lakhimpur (Kheri) with 12 cm in Lakhimpur.

East UP has experienced a slight deficit in rainfall, with 460.5 mm compared to the normal 477.8 mm, a decrease of 4%. Conversely, West UP has seen a 31% excess in rainfall, with 537.5 mm against a normal of 408.9 mm.

The forecast for Lucknow is a generally cloudy to overcast sky with a few spells of rain or thundershowers. A gradual decrease in rainfall is expected thereafter. Temperatures in Lucknow are expected to hover around 32°C (max) and 27°C (min).

In Ayodhya, 11 cm of rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours till 8:30 am, August 12. In the last 24 hours, Lucknow recorded 47.8 mm of rainfall at Hanuman Setu and 47.4 mm at the Aliganj Control Room.

The monsoon is shifting southwards from its current position, increasing both the spatial distribution and intensity of rainfall across the state. The meteorological department predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two to three days in Uttar Pradesh.

Overall, the ongoing active monsoon and meteorological dynamics favor a period of intense rainfall in Uttar Pradesh during the coming days, requiring preparedness for heavy precipitation and related impacts on agriculture, water resources, and daily life.

Cricket matches in Uttar Pradesh may face disruptions due to the anticipated heavy to very heavy rainfall, as forecasted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Due to the shift of the monsoon trough northwards near the Himalayas, frequent spells of rain and thundershowers have been predicted for Uttar Pradesh, potentially affecting outdoor activities such as cricket.
