Torrential Downpours Prompt Orange Warnings; Meteorological Department Issues Red Alerts in Raigad, Schools Cancel Classes
Mumbai and its surrounding areas are preparing for light to moderate rainfall over the next four days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Although there are no specific warnings for heavy rainfall or severe thunderstorms in Mumbai, isolated instances of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are possible.
The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Thane and Pune, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Raigad and Mumbai Suburban districts are under a Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall.
On Tuesday, Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall for the second consecutive day, with Colaba recording 12.2 mm of rainfall and Santacruz receiving 38.2 mm. The city's maximum temperature hovered around 25°C, providing some relief from the heat.
Mumbai's water reservoirs, including Modak Sagar, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, and others, are currently 78.3% full. These lakes are essential to Mumbai's daily water supply and have been a source of relief following the recent rainfall.
Fisherfolk and those living near the coastline have been advised to follow all safety guidelines due to the expected intense rainfall and rough sea conditions. The IMD has also urged residents to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone zones.
For the most current and detailed weather forecast and alerts, it is advisable to check the IMD or local news sources. In related news, authorities have declared a holiday for schools in the talukas of Tala, Roha, Pali, Mahad, Poladhar, and Mangaon in Raigad district due to the Red Alert.
Elsewhere in Maharashtra, Latur is expected to experience thunderstorms with lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) at isolated places.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated with the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of inclement weather.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall in Mumbai and its surrounding areas for the next four days, but has warned of isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Meanwhile, Raigad and Mumbai Suburban districts are under a Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall as per the IMD's weather-forecasting, with Thane and Pune also under an Orange Alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall.
