Ballgame Turnaround: Blue Jays Surprise Red Sox with Monstrous Comeback

After a miserable run, the Toronto Blue Jays managed to pull off their biggest win of the season, turning a six-run deficit into a 7-6 victory against the Boston Red Sox. Here's the lowdown:

Alejandro Kirk was the game-changer, smashing a game-winning RBI single to left-center with the bases loaded in the 10th inning, wrapping up a stellar performance he started four innings earlier.

Things looked grim for the powerless Jays as Boston stormed ahead with a 6-0 lead through two innings, adding another two runs on a Carlos Narvaez homer off Chad Green in the sixth.

But the Jays' bats finally sprung to life after a nearly two-week hibernation in the bottom of the sixth against Lucas Giolito, who made his first big-league start since suffering an elbow injury in spring training last year.

With two outs, George Springer drew a walk. Daulton Varsho and Kirk followed with the Jays' first back-to-back homers of the season to narrow the gap.

In the seventh, again with two outs, Anthony Santander blasted a three-run homer - the Jays' second this season - tying up the game.

Heaters, Not Helpers

Bleak Beginnings

Yariel Rodriguez served as the opener following the removal of Casey Lawrence, who was designated for assignment after securing the final eight outs in Tuesday's series-opening 10-2 loss.

Before the game, manager John Schneider encouraged Rodriguez to keep the same mentality he had as a reliever.

"It's like you're closing the game in the first two innings," said Schneider. "Don't feel your way through it."

Instead, Rodriguez started off on the wrong foot, walking Jarren Duran to begin the game, then giving up a double off the right-field wall to Rafael Devers. Duran took a gamble and didn't pick up the ball, hesitated around second base and was tagged out at the plate.

But Rodriguez squandered the opportunity, tossing a wild pitch to send Devers to third and subsequently balking him home. Alex Bregman followed with a solo home run, leaving the Jays down by two after just three batters.

Left-Leaning Trends

Brendon Little stepped in to pitch the eighth inning, as two of the three upcoming Boston hitters were left-handed. The southpaw has been the Blue Jays' go-to option against lefties this season, but an unusual pattern persists. He gave up a leadoff single to lefty Wilyer Abreu and then retired the next three hitters, all right-handed.

This isn't uncommon for Little. This season, left-handed batters are hitting a solid .280 against him, while righties are striking out at a .160 pace.

Swinging Strikes

Blue Jays hitting coach David S. Popkins was tossed after protesting Kirk's called third strike in the bottom of the fourth inning. Three consecutive Jays hitters contested the call, with Kirk and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. being called out on pitches that barely caught the outside corner. The pitch on which George Springer went down shouldn't have been a strike from the moment it left Giolito's fingertips.
