Scottish Cyclist Oscar Onley Shines in Tour de France

Scottish professional cyclist Oscar Onley has made a significant impact in the 2024 Tour de France, securing a top-four finish and establishing himself as a rising star in the world of cycling.

Onley, who is currently riding for UCI WorldTeam Team Picnic–PostNL, has shown remarkable progress as a climber and general classification contender in this year's race. His final position, as of the last rest day, places him in the top six.

Matt Winston, Onley's sports director, expressed his admiration for the young cyclist's performance, stating that it was superb and better than expected. Winston had initially expected Onley to finish in the top 8, 9, or 10. However, Onley's determination and skill have surpassed these expectations.

Throughout the Tour, Onley has been competing closely behind the podium positions, even finding himself in a select group with Tadej Pogačar, Jonas Vingegaard, and Florian Lipowitz, a position that wasn't anticipated before the race.

Onley lost some time to Lipowitz but managed to maintain his position in fourth place. There was a gap of five minutes between Onley and Felix Gall in fifth place, a testament to his consistent performance.

Onley's maturity during the race has also been noteworthy. Winston praised Onley for his composure, stating that he is not expected to get ahead of himself and will continue to stick to his process.

This top-four finish in the Tour de France is a fantastic achievement for Onley, making him one of a handful of Britons to ever be in the top five on the General Classification (GC) of the Tour de France, at just 22 years old.

With Winston expressing his hope for Onley and Picnic PostNL to return to the Tour de France in the future, it seems that the future for this young cyclist is indeed promising. Onley has undoubtedly announced himself at this Tour de France and will continue to be a force to reckon with in the world of cycling.
