Top-tier Jazz Performers Elevate Holy Cross with Their Talent

In a captivating evening of world-class jazz, Mike Monaghan, a renowned saxophonist and jazz educator, took centre stage at Brooks Concert Hall. Monaghan, who has collaborated with the Boston Pops Orchestra, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, and many other legendary artists, led a band of five exceptional musicians for an hour of unforgettable jazz instrumentation.

The concert, a long-held tradition on the Holy Cross campus, was titled "Mike Monaghan & Friends." It was a night filled with improvisation, humour, and a relaxed atmosphere, thanks to Monaghan's engaging personality.

The performance, inspired by the chaotic events of 2020, began with a minute-long improvised solo from Monaghan on his saxophone, showcasing his tremendous facility on the instrument. The setlist was a mix of classic jazz tunes and contemporary pieces, including a bluesy rendition of The Original Dixieland Jazz Band's "Bluin' the Blues," recorded in 1916.

The band, consisting of John Wilkins on the guitar, Peter Kontrimas on the bass, Marty Richards on drums, and Mike Monaghan on the saxophone, also provided the rhythm for iconic film music from Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Monaghan, who teaches at Holy Cross University and organizes the traditional jazz concert event, took the opportunity to educate the audience about the history of jazz. He presented it as a uniquely American art form that originated from the mix of African and European musical traditions in the American South a century ago.

The concert ended with the band playing "Sweet Georgia Brown" to great applause, serving as a fitting end to an hour of world-class jazz instrumentation. The musicianship and humour of Monaghan and his band created a memorable experience for all in attendance.

Meanwhile, at the Prior Performing Arts Center, Johnny Gandelsman, a Grammy Award-winning violinist and producer, presented his project "This is America." Simultaneously, the Holy Cross Wind Ensemble and Orchestra held an event showcasing their practice from the last few months.

As the curtain falls on another successful "Mike Monaghan & Friends" concert, jazz enthusiasts eagerly await the next instalment of this cherished tradition on the Holy Cross campus.
