Top Ten Notable Golfers Failing to Advance Past RBC Canadian Open Qualification Round

At the midway point of the RBC Canadian Open, it's Cameron Champ who's leading with a score of 12-under-par. The American has delivered two flawless rounds at TPC Toronto, scoring 62 and 66, giving him a two-shot advantage over the rest of the field.

Champ had a shaky start to the tournament as an alternate, but he's seized the moment and taken the 36-hole lead. Andrew Putnam trails Champ by two strokes, with former Ryder Cup star Thorbjorn Olesen, Richard Lee, and Nick Taylor all sitting at nine-under and in contention.

While a number of notable players are in the running for the title, some big names were cut short earlier in the tournament. One of those was tournament favorite Rory McIlroy. Despite completing the Career Grand Slam at The Masters in April, McIlroy has been struggling with results. After scoring 71 and 78, he will head into the upcoming US Open searching for better form.

Struggling Stalwarts

Several other top players had a disappointing showing at the RBC Canadian Open. Here are a few examples:

Alex Noren (-2)

After a strong outing at the PGA Championship, Noren faltered at the RBC Canadian Open, carding rounds of 67 and 71. Despite a solid first round, he missed the cut by a single stroke following a costly second round with three birdies and four bogeys.

Max Homa (-2)

Homa, who narrowly missed out on the US Open qualification earlier in the week, continued to struggle in Canada. He scored back-to-back 69s to miss the cut by one shot. Homa's back-nine on the second day did him in, with a double bogey on the 11th hole leaving him with a one-over-par 36 and missing the weekend.

Tom Kim (-1)

Like Homa, Kim has been struggling for form this season. He shot a level-par 70 and a one-under-par 69 at the RBC Canadian Open to finish two shots behind the cutline.

Justin Rose (-1)

The experienced Englishman produced two unpredictable rounds at TPC Toronto, ultimately missing his sixth weekend of the season. On Thursday, he was five-under through 10 holes, but bogeys on the 13th and 15th put him at a two-under finish. His second round included four birdies, 11 pars, one bogey, and two doubles, which wasn't enough to secure a spot for the weekend.

Other Notable Misses

Nicolai Hojgaard (-1)

Hojgaard managed rounds of 68 and 71 at TPC Toronto to miss the cut by two strokes.

Luke Clanton (-1)

Making his professional debut, Clanton failed to replicate his strong form from the middle of last year, missing his first cut as a pro.

Sungjae Im (E)

Im, known for his consistent performances on the PGA Tour, missed the cut for the fifth time this season.

Gary Woodland (+1)

After finishing T11 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Woodland was unable to replicate that promise at the RBC Canadian Open. Struggling on the back nine, his round of 70 left him four shots behind the cutline.

Rory McIlroy (+9)

McIlroy, once the tournament favorite, finished at nine-over-par following an uncharacteristic 71 and 78. Losing 8.471 strokes to the field on Friday, his second-worst round of his career, McIlroy admitted concerns about his form going into the upcoming US Open.

  1. Despite his strong performance at the PGA Championship, Alex Noren struggled in the golf (sports) world, faltering at the RBC Canadian Open and missing the cut by a single stroke.
  2. Making his professional debut in the Canadian Open, Luke Clanton failed to replicate his strong form from the previous year, missing his first cut as a pro in the world of sports.
