In the picturesque town of Regensburg, the annual Guggenberger Legionaires' Business Barbecue Cup took place, attracting teams from various businesses, government agencies, and associations for a day of competitive baseball and camaraderie. This year marked the 16th edition of the tournament, which took place before the World Cup 2009.

The event, organised by the Guggenberger Legionäre Regensburg, a local baseball club, welcomed 46 mixed company teams, bringing together nearly 550 players, both beginners and experienced, to compete in ten pitches over three hours. The tournament's unique blend of sport and social gathering created a festive barbecue atmosphere, making it an exciting and enjoyable experience for all participants.

The BBQ-Cup's significance lies in its ability to promote baseball as a mass phenomenon. By engaging a wide range of organisations beyond traditional sports clubs, the tournament broadens the sport's appeal and accessibility, fostering community interest, generating enthusiasm, and integrating baseball deeper into the local cultural fabric.

Every team in the competition managed to score at least six points, demonstrating the competitive spirit and skill level on display. Two teams, SGIFFOXX and Essics-Sports, stood out with an impressive +16 record, winning their games by large margins, 21:5 and 18:2 respectively.

The final of the BBQ-Cup was a closely contested match between defending champions SGIFFOXX and Essics-Sports. The game was played under floodlights on the main field where the Bundesliga team usually plays, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event. In the end, it was the Essics selection, primarily composed of U-20 ice hockey players, who emerged victorious, taking home the winner's trophy, which was presented by Legionaires board member Armin Zimmermann.

Twenty-two teams experienced both victory and defeat during the tournament, while 13 teams boasted a 2:0 win record. Unfortunately, 11 selections remained winless in the BBQ-Cup, but the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie remained high throughout the day.

The Guggenberger Legionaires' BBQ-Cup serves as a testament to the popularity of baseball in the region. As the annual event continues to grow, it is clear that baseball in Regensburg is more than just a sport - it's a community tradition that brings people together, fosters friendly competition, and celebrates the spirit of sport.
