India Steps Up Response Against Pakistan Amid Tensions

New Delhi is heating up as India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, huddles with top security officials, fueling speculation about India's counter-offensive plans against Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack.

Earlier in the week, Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh joined the tête-à-tête, marking a series of high-level consultations that come as discussions with the Indian Air Force and Navy chiefs on the previous weekend. These key meetings take on significance amidst growing uncertainty about the strategic response India prepares, upholding its vow to deliver a crushing blow to terrorism.

The latest rendezvous with the Defense Secretary reportedly saw the Prime Minister briefed on ongoing unprovoked firing along the Line of Control (LoC). Sources reveal that during the small arms fire on May 4-5, posts opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir received fire in 11 consecutive nights. The Indian Army retaliated promptly.

India's stance further bolstered as Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi briefed the Prime Minister on the security situation across critical maritime zones in the Arabian Sea.

Last week, Modi met with the top brass of all three armed forces, assuring them full confidence and the liberty to decide the mode, targets, and timing of the response to the Pahalgam terror attack, causing 26 casualties.

This situation unfolds amidst Pakistan's recent test of its Abdali surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a 450 km range, during its military exercise 'Exercise INDUS'.

India's response strategy encompasses both diplomatic and military avenues. There is a likelihood of India suspending the Indus Water Treaty, a significant move that could impact Pakistan's water supply. Additionally, diplomatic presence has been reduced, and border crossings like the Attari-Wagah have been closed. Travel restrictions for Pakistani nationals have also been tightened.

The Armed Forces are gearing up for a robust military response from India, potentially surpassing previous operations such as Operation Bandar following the Pulwama attack. Limited military exchanges already occurred earlier along the LoC, with the potential for further escalation.

India is also attempting to gather international pressure on Pakistan, emphasizing the necessity to curb terrorism. Modi's administration has been fortifying its domestic stance on national security, vowing to aggressively pursue terrorists and their sponsors.

Should tensions escalate, confrontations could escalate further. Pakistan has threatened to close its airspace to Indian airlines, suspend trade, and potentially renegotiate other agreements, like the Simla Agreement.
