Top 10 Spectacular Found-Footage Horror Shorts from 'V/H/S'

The V/H/S anthology series, a collaboration between horror streamer Shudder and creative minds, has been keeping found-footage horror alive since its inception in 2012. With seven entries under its belt, the eighth, V/H/S/Halloween, is set to arrive on October 3.

The series has been renowned for its innovative use of the found-footage format, capturing a range of repulsive imagery as its characters stumble into an alarming range of unnatural situations, with recording devices conveniently capturing everything.

Let's delve into some of the most memorable segments from the V/H/S series.

In V/H/S/94, Ryan Prows directed "Terror", a chilling tale of a militia of Christian extremists who plan to use a vampire for an explosive weapon. However, as one might expect, things go awry, leading to a series of events that are anything but predictable.

In the same series, "Storm Drain" introduced the catchphrase "Hail Raatma!" into the V/H/S universe.

Fast forward to V/H/S/85 (2023), and Mike P. Nelson directed both "No Wake" and "Ambrosia". "No Wake" is a lakeside splatterfest that ends with survivors vowing revenge, while "Ambrosia" is a tale of a teen undergoing a violent coming-of-age ritual.

Scott Derrickson, co-writer and director of Sinister and Doctor Strange, lent his talents to "Dreamkill" in V/H/S/85 (2023), a segment involving psychic abilities and brutal murders.

V/H/S/99 (2022) featured "To Hell and Back", a segment where a pair of filmmakers accidentally get transported into hell and must escape. This segment was directed by Vanessa and Joseph Winter, who also directed Deadstream.

Parallel Monsters, from V/H/S: Viral, directed by Nacho Vigalondo, is a segment that delves into a man who invents a doorway to a parallel universe and discovers his duplicate, leading to a series of events that reveal their worlds are not interchangeable.

In V/H/S/Beyond (2024), Justin Martinez directed "Live and Let Dive", a segment where skydivers encounter aliens, and Kate Segal, with a script by Mike Flanagan, directed "Stowaway", a segment involving a woman filming UFO witnesses and experiencing haunting body horror.

The first V/H/S entry, "10/31/98", directed by Radio Silence, a team that later went on to direct Ready or Not and Scream, is set on Halloween and follows a group of costumed, camera-toting friends who stumble into the wrong address, uncovering an evil that chases them as they try to escape.

"A Ride in the Park", from V/H/S/2, directed by Eduardo Sánchez, a director of The Blair Witch Project, features a mountain biker who encounters a hysterical woman on a trail and realizes too late he's cycled into a burgeoning zombie apocalypse.

With each new installment, the V/H/S series continues to push the boundaries of found-footage horror, offering viewers a unique and terrifying experience. The upcoming V/H/S/Halloween promises to be no exception, as it promises to deliver more of the series' signature blend of horror, suspense, and innovation.
