Rallying in Linz: A Day of Protests and Celebrations 🇦🇹

Get ready for some political spectacle in Linz, Austria, as May Day rolls around on May 1st. The Social Democrats are planning a massive rally in the city center, making it the second-biggest May Day event in the entire country! 💥

The jamboree kicks off bright and early at 9 am in the Volksgarten, with the procession moving towards the Hauptplatz an hour and a half later. The city's Mayor, Dietmar Prammer (SPO), will deliver a speech at the Hauptplatz, carrying on a long-standing tradition. This year's theme, "We stand by you. Linz," emphasizes unity across various sections, associations, organizations, and businesses. Mayor Prammer explains, "This theme underscores the Social Democrats' unwavering commitment to the city, a commitment they've upheld since 1945." 🤝

Don't worry about feeling peckish during the event — there'll be free drinks, snacks, and seating available at the Hauptplatz. Plus, there'll even be a bouncy castle for the little ones, courtesy of the Linz Children's Friends! 🎈

If you're looking for a different kind of event, the Mayday alliance also has something for you. They're organizing an alternative May Day event, starting at 10:30 am in Schillerpark, heading through the city center, and ending at the Hauptplatz around 12 pm. Later in the day, from 2 pm, the KPO will host a street festival in Melicharstraße. 🎫

Now, buckle up for some disruptions in your public transportation schedule, as the May Day events will cause some temporary chaos. Trams will be suspended between the Hauptbahnhof and Sonnensteinstraße, as well as Landgutstraße, from 8:30 am to 1 pm. 🚌

Meanwhile, the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPOe) will also be holding a May Day gathering featuring speeches by their leader, Herbert Kickl. The exact venue is unspecified, but it'll be happening somewhere in Linz. 🏠

If you're in Linz this May, you've got plenty to see and do! Just remember to plan your travel around the May Day events and public transportation disruptions. Meanwhile, other events taking place in May include the Festival 4020, Urfahranermarkt, Crossing Europe Film Festival, and the Festival of Curiosity.
