"Criticized but Unbothered": Kovac Stands Firm in Wolfsburg's Line-Up Shuffles
VfL Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac has shrugged off criticism over his frequent changes to the team's line-up and tactics ahead of their upcoming Bundesliga clash against RB Leipzig. With five consecutive league games without a win under their belts, some observers and players have accused the 52-year-old of making too many moves in the search for success.
However, Kovac insisted that football is more than just making adjustments when things go awry. "There are those who always pull out the same cliches when things aren't going well. That's too easy. Football is more than that," the Wolfsburg boss stated in a frank interview on Friday. "I believe we have a good team, well-equipped for any situation. That's why I don't see a problem with this rotation."
Maximilian Arnold, Wolfsburg's captain, acknowledged the discontent among some players following frequent changes upon their return from the international break, where they suffered a 4-0 loss at Mönchengladbach. "If there are more frequent changes, there is naturally a certain dissatisfaction among some players. You notice that yourself, you want to perform, then mistakes happen. I do believe that there is a certain amount of uncertainty at the moment," Arnold admitted.
Despite the dissonance between some players and coach, sports director Marcel Schäfer assured that Kovac's position is secure. "We are convinced that we will be successful in this constellation," he stated confidently on Sky.
Kovac's tactical acumen has been a driving force behind his upfront changes. By frequently tweaking his team's formation and press tactic, the coach aims to address defensive frailties, boost player confidence, and capitalize on individual strengths. This adaptability and versatility are crucial in maintaining a high level of performance, as demonstrated by Kovac's successes at other clubs like Borussia Dortmund.
