"Tony McCarroll, Oasis' initial drummer, discloses the heated argument that ultimately resulted in his dismissal from the band"
Tony McCarroll, the original drummer for the iconic British band Oasis, was sacked from the group in 1995 following an incident in a Paris hotel. The argument or dispute that took place was a turning point in McCarroll's career with the band, leading directly to his dismissal.
McCarroll played a crucial role in the early success of Oasis, contributing to the band's debut album, Definitely Maybe, as well as their next two singles, Whatever and Some Might Say. However, the events that unfolded in Paris during the spring of 1995 would change the course of his journey with the band forever.
In an interview with The Sun, McCarroll discussed the incident, describing it as "probably the most stupid thing I’ve ever done in my life." The confrontation during a soundcheck, where Noel Gallagher threatened to fire him, was a significant factor in his sacking, which occurred a matter of weeks later.
Despite the circumstances, McCarroll seems remarkably lacking in bitterness about the way things turned out. He claims he doesn't regret standing up to Noel Gallagher, viewing it as a matter of bravado, not a serious threat to his position.
The repercussions of his sacking extended beyond the loss of his role in the band. McCarroll later sued Oasis for unpaid royalties and came to a £550,000 settlement. The settlement required him to relinquish all claims on future royalties.
Reflecting on his time with Oasis, McCarroll wishes he had more money but is proud of making his mark in the band. He even expressed an interest in making up with Noel Gallagher after all these years, indicating that the past may not be a source of lasting resentment for him.
