Tony Awards Spotlight: Anticipated Performances and Award Categories to Watch

In the 2021 Broadway season, a whopping 29 productions gained nods at the Tony Awards. Yet, not everyone will be taking home the coveted prize - and the greenbacks that come with it. Here's a rundown of some hotly-contested categories and their nominees.

But hey, who needs awards when you've got talent, right? Let's dive in!

Musicals Mecca: Vying for the Top Spot

The race for Best Musical is a fierce one, with the following five shows battling it out:

  1. Moulin Rouge The Musical (the ultimate winner)
  2. Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations
  3. Beetlejuice
  4. Hadestown (already claimed a win in 2019 but part of the 2020-2021 season)
  5. The Prom

Dramatic Duels: Navigating the Bard's Battleground

The Best Play category is just as competitive, with five productions going head to head:

  1. The Inheritance (dethroning its opponents)
  2. Grand Horizons
  3. The Sound Inside
  4. Sea Wall/A Life
  5. Slave Play

Revivals Redux: A Walk Down Memory Lane

In the Best Revival of a Musical category, there were some interesting nominations, with one production omitted due to eligibility issues:

  • The Boys in the Band and The Prom were both nominated, but Moulin Rouge The Musical couldn't compete in this category because it was considered a new musical.

Unfortunately for The Prom, it didn't snag a win in this category, with Company taking home the trophy instead.

The Best Revival of a Play nominations included:

  1. A Soldier's Play (emerging triumphant)
  2. Betrayal
  3. The Deep Blue Sea
  4. The Rose Tattoo

These nominations and winners reflect the resilience and quality of Broadway productions during the COVID-19-plagued 2020-2021 season. Bravo to all the artists involved, and here's to more excellent theatre!

  • competitors in the Best Musical category offer a range of entertainment options, including "Moulin Rouge The Musical", "Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations", "Beetlejuice", "Hadestown" and "The Prom"
  • viewers can look forward to engaging performances in the Best Revival of a Play category, featuring nominees such as "A Soldier's Play", "Betrayal", "The Deep Blue Sea" and "The Rose Tattoo"
