It's a special day at the Berlin Zoo as the internet's beloved pygmy hippo Toni celebrates her first birthday with a bang! According to mammal curator and biologist Florian Sicks, this is part of an European breeding program, much like dwarf hippos in the wild would embark on their own journey at around 10 to 11 months old. So, animal lovers should pay a visit to Toni before summer ends to catch a glimpse of her for one last time.
Toni has grown quite a bit since her birth, tipping the scales at approximately 100 kg! Animal keeper Lucas Baum reports that Toni is in high spirits, eating well, and everything seems absolutely perfect.
Toni maintains a dedicated following on social media, according to zoo spokeswoman Svenja Eisenbarth. Her videos and photos bring endless joy to fans from around the world.
One of Toni's most popular videos has garnered 13.4 million views on TikTok, making her a virtual member of an exclusive girl gang consisting of Moo Deng in Thailand, Poppy in the USA, and Haggis in Scotland. Eisenbarth shared that Moo Deng has already sent Toni a birthday message, and a video call was made to Thailand to mark the special occasion.
