Say hello to Toni, the darling pygmy hippo creating ripples at Berlin's Zoological Garden! With her 1st birthday bash featuring an ice cream cake adorned with peanuts, carrots, and apple pieces, Toni's got the world hooked - and it's no wonder!

This web-renowned cutie is none other than the Happy Hippo, a global superstar who became a sensation last summer. A seemingly ordinary video of her frolicking in a wash tub took the TikTok world by storm, garnering an impressive 13.4 million views[1]! Now, there's a dedicated Toni clan eagerly tuning in each day to catch their beloved star surrounded by adoring fans[2].

Witness the joy as Toni "trills" her ears or sprints around the enclosure. But let's not forget her favorite activities of all - munching on snacks or snoozing cozily on that straw bed!

From rocky beginnings to shining stardom

Sadly, there were rough seas ahead for the little one. She weighed a hefty 3560 grams at birth and gave birth to twin brother[3]. Unfortunately, her sibling was smaller and couldn't make it. Florian Sicks, our zoo biologist and caretaker of mammals, shared the news.

Initially, Toni's pelvic fracture slowed her down. However, she's recovered in spades, now tipping the scales at an impressive 28 times her birthweight! Toni barely interacts with her mother Debbie anymore and is now self-sufficient.

Did you know that there are merely 3500 pygmy hippos left in the wild, with 20 roaming in Germany alone[4]? These timid creatures prefer to keep their distance. On a brighter note, mom and daughter manage to maintain a bond, but they'll soon bid each other farewell. Toni has a new home to explore later this year[5].

For now, mother and daughter may still indulge in their shared dips in the enclosure - but they're land-bound, not swimmers. While Debbie digs into apple pieces and peanuts, Toni tends to lap up her frozen treat.

Then, a bounce of joy that left onlookers and staff beaming. Check out 100 kilos of pure adorableness, but keep in mind it won't be gracing the Zoological Garden for much longer...
