Young Star Oscar Onley Shines at 2025 Tour de France

Oscar Onley, a 22-year-old cyclist from the Scottish Borders, showcased an impressive performance at the 2025 Tour de France, ultimately finishing in fourth place. This result, just over a minute behind the podium placings, exceeded expectations, especially in the challenging mountain stages.

On Stage 19, Onley was only 22 seconds off the podium at the start but lost time on the final climb of La Plagne, ending 1:03 behind third place. However, he managed to catch up to Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard, the leaders, and finished the race just four seconds behind Vingegaard.

Despite the tough conditions, with cold, wet, and miserable weather including freezing rain, hail, and low cloud, Onley performed admirably. His team-mates, Warren Barguil and Frank van den Broek, made a huge effort to bring him back into the action, setting him up for a strong finish.

Onley's climbing was highlighted on the queen stage to Courchevel, where he recovered time and stayed competitive despite earlier time losses on the climbs. His consistent top-10 stage finishes (eight top-10s in 2025) demonstrate great consistency and growing strength across the three weeks.

Matt Winston, Onley's sports director, praised his team's performance and Onley's nutrition management. Sean Flynn, Onley's team-mate, expressed that Onley is very focused and knows what he needs to do. Winston described Onley's fourth-place finish as impressive and a fantastic ride.

A podium place and the white jersey would be a significant achievement for Onley, thought to be something that wouldn't come for another couple of years. However, Onley remains focused for the next stage, La Plagne, a 19.3km long climb at 7.2%.

Onley's rapid development and near-podium finish at his young career mark him as a strong future contender for podium finishes and possibly overall victories in Grand Tours. His team and coaches see him as a super talent with strong development support, indicating a promising future in the world of cycling.

Despite finishing in fourth place at the 2025 Tour de France, Oscar Onley's impressive performance in challenging conditions showcases his potential in sports. With a near-podium finish, Onley is seen as a strong future contender in the world of cycling.
