Tomorrow, Oscar Onley is set to give his all, as he lies only 22 seconds behind the Tour de France podium and the coveted white jersey, with a challenging mountain stage still ahead.
Oscar Onley Narrowly Misses Podium at Tour de France
After an impressive performance in stage 18 of the 2025 Tour de France, Oscar Onley found himself just a few seconds away from the podium in the general classification. The young cyclist, who is only 22 years old, has been making waves in the racing world with his resilience and determination.
Before stage 18, Onley was in fifth place, about 8 minutes and 11 seconds behind the leader, Tadej Pogačar. However, his strong performance on the Col de la Madeleine, a hors category climb, helped him move closer to the top three. With the help of his teammates Warren Barguil and Frank van den Broek, Onley managed to catch up to Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard, coming in four seconds behind Vingegaard during the stage.
By stage 19, Onley was officially in fourth place overall, just 22 seconds off the podium. This solidified him as one of the top contenders in the race, and he continues to be a force to be reckoned with as the race enters its final stages.
Picnic PostNL sports director Matt Winston believes that Onley's strong performance is due in part to his excellent nutrition. "Oscar has been on top of his game when it comes to his diet," Winston said. "He's been diligent about sticking to his meal plan, and it's paid off in a big way."
The next stage of the Tour de France is La Plagne, a 19.3km climb at an average gradient of 7.2%. The stage may be run in the rain again, as has been the case in previous stages. Onley has already demonstrated his ability to handle challenging conditions, having survived the rain and hail in the Alps for one day out of two.
Despite his strong performance, Onley is still aware that he has some work to do if he wants to make it onto the podium. "It was hard during stage 18, and Visma set a hard pace," Onley said. "I felt good during the Col de la Madeleine, but I'm not at the level of Pogačar and Vingegaard when they attack. I'll just keep pushing and see what happens."
With three stages remaining, Onley is still very much in the running for a podium spot. He will need to continue to push himself and make the most of every opportunity if he wants to secure a place on the podium at the end of the race.
Sports enthusiasts are eagerly watching as Oscar Onley continues to perform impressively in the Tour de France, closing the gap between himself and the podium. Despite barely missing out on a spot in the top three, the 22-year-old cyclist remains determined to improve and fight for a chance to stand on the podium in the final stages.
