Tomas Lindberg, vocalist of Swedish melodic death metal band At The Gates, passes away at the age of 52 after battling cancer.
Tomas Lindberg, the founding member and vocalist of Swedish death metal band At The Gates, has passed away at the age of 52. The news was confirmed by the band in a statement, with the cause of death being complications related to Lindberg's ongoing cancer treatment.
Lindberg, who hailed from Gothenburg, formed At The Gates in 1990 after the dissolution of his and guitarist Alf Svensson's death metal band Grotesque. The band's classic lineup released their debut EP, Gardens Of Grief, in 1991 and debut album, The Red In The Sky Is Ours, in 1992. In 1993, Svensson was replaced by Martin Larsson, who was chosen due to his past work in thrash metal band The House Of Usher.
At The Gates' international breakthrough came with the release of Slaughter Of The Soul in 1995. The album marked a key inspiration for the New Wave Of American Heavy Metal. Lindberg's lyrics in At The Gates' early material were existential and poetic compared to other extreme metal vocalists'.
Following At The Gates' break-up in 1996, due to the departure of Anders, who was fatigued by the heavy metal touring lifestyle, Lindberg joined multiple bands and supergroups, including Disfear, Skitsystem, and Lock Up.
In a statement published on August 15, Lindberg admitted that it had been a tough year and he may have to undergo chemotherapy. His cancer diagnosis was made public last month, when he was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a cancer of the mouth and pallet.
At The Gates reformed in 2007 and released three further albums - At War With Reality (2014), To Drink From The Night Itself (2018), and The Nightmare Of Being (2021). Bandmates described Lindberg as an inspiration, a true friend, both compassionate and sympathetic. They remembered him for his generosity and creative spirit.
The news of Lindberg's death was announced by David Isberg, former vocalist of Opeth. Lindberg leaves behind a son and a then-teenage daughter, as he mentioned in 2010. He spoke little about his private life during interviews. Information about his partner was not available in the provided search results, nor is there any information about the last public mention of his relationship.
Lindberg's death occurred on September 16, 2023. The death metal community mourns the loss of a true icon and a beloved figure. Rest in peace, Tomas Lindberg.
