Tom Pidcock expresses self-satisfaction after successfully maintaining third position at the Vuelta

Tom Pidcock, a member of the Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, delivered a stunning performance in Saturday's mountain stage of the Vuelta a España 2022, Bola del Mundo. Despite losing nine seconds to Jai Hindley, the solo winner of the stage Jonas Vingegaard, Pidcock crossed the finish line in fourth place, 18 seconds behind Vingegaard.

Pidcock described Saturday's stage as feeling like a one-day race, a testament to his resilience and determination. He expressed that with the race's focus shifting, he doesn't need to put his jacket on or drink cherry juice or have a recovery shake. His remarks suggest that he remains focused on the final stage of the Vuelta, which will take place in Madrid on Sunday evening.

Pidcock's performance on Bola del Mundo was, in his own words, the biggest of his career. He felt confident going into the decisive test and felt in control on the steepest climbs. Despite losing seconds to Hindley, who races for Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe, Pidcock never felt he was going to lose much ground.

As it stands, Pidcock is currently in third place in the General Classification (GC) of the Vuelta, with Jonas Vingegaard ahead and João Almeida also ahead of him in the GC. However, Pidcock has a buffer of 30 seconds on Hindley going into Sunday's stage.

Pidcock's comments indicate a sense of confidence and control despite the challenging stage. The stage, known for its rough surface and steep gradients, proved to be a tough test for the cyclists. Pidcock used Yorkshire slang to express his relief at not needing to take recovery measures, further demonstrating his ease with the gruelling conditions.

Looking ahead to Sunday's final stage, Pidcock will be aiming to maintain his position in the GC and potentially challenge for a podium finish. The final stage in Madrid promises to be an exciting conclusion to the Vuelta a España 2022.
