Tom Izzo stays at Michigan State, rejecting NBA's Suns for 31st season

Tom Izzo will remain at Michigan State for a 31st season, turning down another chance to coach in the NBA. His decision follows discussions with Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia, a former Spartans player under Izzo. Meanwhile, Izzo's record of 28 straight NCAA Tournament appearances continues after this year's Sweet 16 exit. Izzo seriously considered the Suns' head coaching role after talks with Ishbia. The two share a long history, with Ishbia playing for Michigan State in the early 2000s. Despite the offer, Izzo opted to stay in college basketball, extending his tenure with the Spartans.

This marks the sixth time Izzo has rejected an NBA opportunity. Previous offers came from franchises like Cleveland and Atlanta, but he has consistently chosen Michigan State. His latest decision came even as his team fell to Connecticut in the Sweet 16, ending their tournament run. Ishbia, now the Suns' owner, has brought in familiar faces from the Spartans programme. He hired former Michigan State assistant Brian Gregory as general manager and ex-video coordinator Jordan Ott as a coach. Another former Izzo player, Mateen Cleaves, was also given a role in player development. Izzo's influence extended beyond his own team this season. After Connecticut's Dan Hurley received an offer from the Los Angeles Lakers, he sought Izzo's advice before making a decision. Hurley's Huskies went on to eliminate Michigan State from the tournament.

Izzo's choice keeps him at Michigan State, where he has built a legacy of consistency and success. His 28 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances remain unmatched. Meanwhile, Ishbia's Suns now feature multiple staff members with ties to the Spartans programme.
