Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell Bring Much Ado to Broadway in a Bold 1990s Twist
A bold new take on Much Ado About Nothing is heading to Broadway this autumn. Directed by Jamie Lloyd, the production will star Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell as the sharp-witted lovers Benedick and Beatrice. Both actors are well known for their roles in major film franchises, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The show marks Atwell's Broadway debut, though she has appeared in films like Mission: Impossible and the Captain America series. Hiddleston, who earned a Tony nomination for Betrayal in 2019, returns to the stage after a successful London run of this production last year.
This version reimagines Shakespeare's comedy in a 1990s setting, filled with house music and a hedonistic atmosphere. British critics praised its energy and humour during its West End performances. The Broadway run will last just 10 weeks, with exact dates and venue still to be confirmed.
The last Broadway staging of Much Ado About Nothing took place in 1984. Lloyd, whose previous Broadway credits include Waiting for Godot and Sunset Boulevard, brings his signature dynamic style to this production.
The announcement confirms a limited engagement for the fall season. Hiddleston and Atwell's casting, along with Lloyd's direction, has already generated strong interest. Tickets and further details are expected to be released in the coming months.
