Tom Fassaert's Between Brothers Uncovers a Haunting Family Legacy at Rotterdam
Dutch filmmaker Tom Fassaert returns with Between Brothers, a deeply personal documentary premiering at the Rotterdam Film Festival. The film examines the complex bond between his father, Rob, and estranged uncle René—both now in their 70s. Eleven years after his acclaimed A Family Affair, Fassaert again delves into family secrets, this time uncovering hidden truths about their past.
The documentary began as a structured exploration of René and Rob's fractured relationship. But it soon evolved into a road movie as the brothers investigated long-buried mysteries, including their time in an orphanage and questions about their lineage. Fassaert wanted to move beyond René's chaotic reputation, instead capturing his self-awareness and sharp critiques of Rob.
The project was sparked by Rob's declaration that he refused to pass trauma to the next generation. This statement pushed Fassaert to confront unresolved family history. Despite his nerves about audience reactions—recalling the emotional impact of A Family Affair—he remains committed to personal storytelling.
Produced by Een van de Jongens and Clin d'Oeil Films, Between Brothers is distributed in the Netherlands by Bantam Film. Fassaert, though cautious about industry shifts, feels optimistic about Dutch documentary filmmaking. He already hints at a third film, this time focusing on his own experiences as a father.
Between Brothers offers a raw look at family, memory, and the weight of the past. The film's premiere marks another chapter in Fassaert's ongoing exploration of inheritance—both emotional and literal. For now, its release remains limited to Dutch audiences, with no confirmed plans for wider distribution.
