"Tom Bartels Discusses Gambling Debts and Facing Criticism"
In the heart of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, live commentator Tom Bartels found himself in an unexpected predicament. During the ceremonial lighting of the Olympic flame, Bartels admitted to having difficulty recognising French athletics legend, Marie-José Pérec. The poor lighting made it a challenge, but Bartels took it in stride, acknowledging that such instances are part and parcel of live commentary.
Bartels, who is known for his work on big football finals and other sporting mega-events in ARD, has faced other challenges as well. He confessed to making mistakes and spending excessively on cars in his youth, which led him to accumulate five-figure gambling debts. However, he considers the experience of paying off his debts as priceless, as it has made him appreciate his job more.
One of the aspects of his job that Bartels finds particularly stressful is public criticism, especially during big tournaments. He admits that criticism is subjective and one cannot prepare for it. The lack of information provided about the torchbearers during the Olympic reportage was a concern for Bartels, a concern shared by his foreign colleagues.
Bartels was lying under plastic sheets in the rain on the tribune during the Olympic reportage, adding to the challenges he faced. Despite these difficulties, he believes that social media can have a negative influence and criticism can stick, even if six people praise a live commentator and one criticizes.
However, Bartels is quick to clarify that he cannot blame himself for the Olympic reportage in hindsight. He finds himself often left alone during big events, a solitude that comes with the territory of his profession. Yet, he remains resilient, continuing to bring his passion and expertise to the commentary booth, providing viewers with an unforgettable experience of the Olympic Games.
