Kenyan athletes are gearing up for the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships, with a strong squad announced that includes Olympic and World champions such as Faith Kipyegon, Ferdinand Omanyala, Mercy Adongo Oketch, and George Mutinda.

The athletes are currently training at various locations within Kenya, with many focusing on high-altitude training, a traditional approach for the country’s long-distance runners. For instance, Kipyegon has been emphasizing her intense and rigorous training routine aimed at maintaining peak health and performance for Tokyo.

George Mutinda, a notable qualifier in the men’s 400m, is training at the University of Embu under coach David Macharia and recently won the national championship in June 2025, clocking a qualifying time of 44.51s.

The Kenyan Athletics federation supports athletes through national championships and the qualifying process, indicating centralized competitive preparation before Tokyo. There are two camps for the athletes: one in Eldoret for middle and long distance athletes, and another in Nairobi for sprinters. The middle and long distance athletes are currently training at the High Performance Training Centre run by track legend Kipchoge Keino in Uasin Gishu.

Cornelius Kemboi and Mathew Kipsang had a superb 5000m race in Oordegem, Belgium, with Kemboi triumphing in the 5000m at the IFAM Oordegem, qualifying for the Tokyo World Championships. Kipsang placed sixth in the same race. The federation is handling the administration to make sure everything is in order for the team to Tokyo. Mathew Kipsang also hit the required time in Oordegem, confirming his place in Team Kenya for the Tokyo World Championships.

Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei stated that the qualification time for the Tokyo World Championships has not yet ended. The sprinters are set to head to Miramas, France, if a good discussion with the relevant parties is successful. John Korir, who defended his Chicago 42km title instead of participating in the marathon cast for the Tokyo World Championships, is optimistic that Kenyan athletes will cement their country’s legacy as a sports powerhouse at the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships.

Thousands of Kenyan athletes who did not make the team to Tokyo are cheering their compatriots in their quest for medals and glory for the nation. The 2025 World Athletics Championships will take place from 13 to 21 September 2025 at the rebuilt National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. The qualifying windows for various events have influenced athlete selection, with some athletes already qualifying automatically either by wild card (e.g., reigning world champions like Kipyegon) or by meeting entry standards during national and international competitions.
