How I solved today's Wordle

ARISE gave me two yellow tones, so I chose SHAWL instead of TOUCH STAND (I figured out the positions for those two while searching for more common letters). The resulting S--M pattern left me with plenty of "sex" options. I went with SHAWL and got S-A-L. What could fit there? Maybe something with an L at the end. It's small.

Intro to Wordle Basics

The objective of Wordle is to guess the secret word of the day. When you first open Wordle, you see an empty letter grid. Begin by entering any five-letter word.

Now, with the displayed colors, you can receive hints:

  • Green means you've correctly guessed a letter and placed it in the right position. (For example, if you guessed PARTY and the actual answer was PURSE, P and R would be green.)
  • Yellow means the letter you guess is used in the word but not at the correct position. (If you guessed PARTY and the actual answer was ROAST, R, A, and T would all be yellow.)
  • Gray means the letter you guessed is not in the word at all. (If you guessed PARTY and all the spaces turn gray, the answer cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

Now, armed with this information, try guessing a word, then another, and gradually figure out the secret word before time runs out. You have six guesses, and then the game is over.

What should you start with? The best initial choices typically contain common letters, increasing your chances of getting some green and yellow squares as pointers. (If you guess common letters and get completely gray, that's still useful information, excluding certain possibilities.) There's no "perfect" starting word, but the New York Times' Wordle-playing robot suggests starting with these:

  • Crane
  • Trend
  • Box
  • Menu

Meanwhile, a MIT analysis found that the following beginnings eliminated the most possibilities in the first round:

  • Trade
  • Rest
  • Trend
  • Shale Shader

Other decent options could be ADIEU or AUDIO. Starting with words that emphasize consonant sounds rather than vowel sounds, and using words like RENTS or CLAMP, should help. Choose your strategy and see how it works for you.

Winning at Wordle

Our Wordle strategy guides may be helpful if you want to delve deeper into the game.

  • This guide focuses on how to use consonants to your advantage.
  • This handbook solely focuses on strategies for using common letters.

In this premium Wordle guide, we share a three-step process for finding tips and maximizing your chances of winning quickly.

The primary difference between Wordle winners and Wordle losers lies in using your guesses to gather information about the letters in the word. If you know the word must end in -OUND, for example, avoid wasting your guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; convert the consonants instead, and try MARSH. If the H turns yellow, you've found your answer. Another crucial tip: The original Wordle used a list of around 2,300 solution words. Now, with the New York Times' involvement, the list has grown, and you may encounter words that are uncommon and haven't appeared before. Consider the possibility of a theme.

Wordle Alternatives

If you're hungry for more than five-letter word puzzles, there are several Wordle alternatives to try (in order of difficulty):

  • Wheeldle, where you can play multiple puzzles in a row
  • Dordle and Quordle, where you must solve two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles at once, guessing the same word for each
  • Waffle, which shows more than one word with five letters and requires you to swap letters until they're solved
  • Lumberjacked, where the solution changes after each guess, but it must still match the previous colors
  • Bridgehead, where you play against other players, with a timer ticking down. Lose too much time between guesses, and you'll take damage; the last person standing wins.
  • Antiwordle, where you try to avoid guessing the solution of the day
