How to Play Wordle

Wordle is available on the New York Times' website. Every day at midnight (your local time), a new puzzle appears.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The letter coloring in the word grid will change accordingly:

  • Green color indicates you've guessed the letter correctly and in the correct position.
  • Yellow color indicates you've guessed the correct letter, but placed it in the wrong position.
  • Gray color indicates the letter doesn't appear in the secret Wordle word of the day.

How I solved today's Wordle

ARISE and TOUCH gave me T and E and hinted that there should be an A. Not many options were left—things like "Taste" and other obvious choices were ruled out due to the letters I had already tried—so it must be almost "Form."

Understanding Wordle Basics

The aim of Wordle is to guess the daily secret word. When you first open the game, you'll see an empty letter grid. The first step for you is: guess a five-letter word.

Now, you can use clues provided by the color-coded tiles:

  • Green color means you've guessed the letter correctly and in the right position.
  • Yellow color means the letter is correct, but placed wrongly.
  • Gray color means the letter doesn't appear in the secret word.

Guess a word and another, and gradually find the right one before you run out of chances. You have six attempts, and then the game ends.

Good Beginner Words for Wordle

What should you try first time? Beginner-friendly words generally contain common letters, helping you get green and yellow squares as orientation. Even if you end up with gray tiles, it's still valuable information, eliminating possible choices. There's no "best" beginner word, but New York Times' Weekday Wordle Starting Words Robot suggests the following options:

  • Crane
  • Need
  • Box
  • Menu

Briefly, a MIT analysis found that starting with the following words eliminated the most options in the first round:

  • Sell
  • Rest
  • Trace
  • Box Shingle

Other good choices could be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO have more vowels, but starting with the stressed consonants and using leading words like RENTS or CLAMP is recommended. Choose your strategy and see how it works.

Winning at Wordle

If you'd like to learn some serious Wordle strategies, these Wordle strategy guides might interest you:

The fundamental difference between successful Wordle players and those who struggle lies in using their guesses to gather information about the letters in the word. If you know it must end in -OUND, don't waste four guesses trying MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine the vowels and guess MARSH. If the H color lights up, you've found the solution.

Another strategy tip: The original Wordle used a list of approximately 2,300 solution words, but after the acquisition by the New York Times, the list changed. This new version now has a human editor that manually selects the day's solution word. Sometimes, it may be more challenging words that wouldn't have appeared on the original list, and sometimes it may be trendy words. "FEAST" is the Thanksgiving solution. Keep these things in mind when playing.
