How I solved today's Wordle

The green S is a good start, but I'll likely still be missing some vowels, so I'll continue with my trusty second TOUCH. It looks like we're dealing with HOUSE when we see the yellow O. It's solved: Today's word must be HOUSE.

Introduction to Wordle Basics

The basic idea of Wordle is to guess the secret Wordle word of the day. When you first open Wordle, you see an empty letter board. Take the first step: Enter any five-letter word.

Now you can receive hints based on the colors displayed:

  • Green means you've guessed a letter correctly and in the right position (if, for example, you guess PARTY and the actual word is PURSE, P and R would be green).
  • Yellow means the letter is in the word but in the wrong position (if you guess PARTY but the actual word is ROAST, R, A, and T would be yellow).
  • Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all. (If you guess PARTY and everything is gray, the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

Guess accordingly, then guess again and try to find the correct word before time runs out. You have six guesses and then the game is over.

Best starting words for Wordle

What should you play first? The best beginner options typically feature common letters, giving you a better chance to get green and yellow squares as a guide. (If you get gray squares when guessing common letters, that's still valuable information that can help you rule out possibilities.) There's no "perfect" starter word, but crane, clue, box, and menu are often recommended. In addition, a MIT analysis found that starting with one of these options eliminated the most possibilities in the first round:

  • store
  • rest
  • clue
  • box shale

Other good options could be ARISE or ROUND. Longer words with more vowels, like ADIEU or AUDIO, might have better starting letters with the emphasis on consonants (like RENTS or CLAMP). Choose your strategy and see how it works out for you.

How to Win at Wordle

We've got a few Wordle strategy guides that might interest you if you're serious about the game. is where we talk about how to use consonants to your advantage, while focuses on strategies for using common letters. In our for more advanced tips, we outline a three-step strategy for finding tips and quickly maximizing your chances of winning.

The main difference between successful Wordle players and those who lose is that the winners use their guesses to collect information about the letters in the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, don't waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; instead, combine the consonants and guess MARSH. If the "H" turns yellow, you know the solution.

One more strategy tip: The original Wordle used a list of about 2,300 solution words, but since it was bought by the New York Times, it now has an editor selecting the solutions handpicked. Sometimes, these words can be a bit challenging and not on the original list, but when there's a theme, there might be specific words related to it (for example, FEAST is the solution for Thanksgiving). Keep that in mind when guessing.

Wordle Alternatives

If you want more than a five-letter puzzle and all that jazz, there are a few popular Wordle alternatives you can explore:

  • Wheeldle, which allows you to solve puzzle after puzzle
  • Dordle and Quordle, which require you to solve two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles simultaneously and provide the same initial guess. There are also other variations like Octordle with eight puzzles and Sedecordle with 16 puzzles.
  • Wafflet, which displays multiple five-letter words in a grid instead of a line. You solve them by swapping letters until they're solved.
  • Chaos, where the solution changes after each guess, but it must still fit the feedback from your previous guesses. You must think strategically and “shove” it into a corner until only one possibility remains; then, guess correctly and win.
  • Brawl, where you compete against other players in a Wordle-style game with a timer. If you take too long between guesses, you take damage; the last player standing wins.
  • Antiwordle, where you try to not guess the daily solution. You must remember all the letters you guess correctly and then reuse them in your next attempts. The longer you spend on the game, the better you’ll do.
