How I solved Today's Wordle

Start as usual period: A, R and S are yellow. I thought about SAR, SEA, or SAR, but these seemed less promising. I went with SCRAP because I thought I could split it into two parts. I didn't do it, but the results were S green and R and A yellow, narrowing it down to SARP. It's sharp.

Welcome to Wordle Basics

Wordle's aim is to guess the secret word of the day. When you first open the game, you'll see an empty grid.

Your first step: Enter a five-letter word.

Now, with the help of the colored squares, you can gather clues about the word:

  • Green squares mean you have the correct letter in the right place. (For example, if you guessed PARTY and the actual word is PURSE, the P and R squares will turn green.)
  • Yellow squares mean the letter is in the word but not in the right place. (For example, if you guessed PARTY, and the actual word is ROAST, the R, A, and T squares will all turn yellow.)
  • Gray squares mean the letter is not in the word at all. (If you guessed PARTY and all squares are gray, the word can't be PURSE or ROAST.)

Remember to test different guesses and find the correct one before you run out of tries.

Best introductory Wordle words

Beginners should consider words rich in common letters to improve their chances of green and yellow squares. Do not worry about the first word; there's no best starting word, but the strongest starting options are:

  • Crane
  • Clue
  • Box
  • Menu

An MIT analysis found that starting with one of the following quick eliminates many options in the first round:

  • Outfit
  • Rest
  • Track
  • Shale R&B

Other good options could be ARISE or ROUND. Words with more vowels, like ADIEU or AUDIO, may be less effective because they focus on vowels and common consonants. Instead, try to prioritize common consonants in your starting words, such as RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy and see how you fare.

Winning at Wordle

Great at Wordle tips and guides can help you master the game, such as or .

One vital distinction between Wordle-winners and Wordle-losers lies in how they use their guesses to gain clues about the letters in the word. If you're convinced the word endswith -OUND, don't waste guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, or HOUND; combinate the consonants and guess MARSH. The H turns yellow, so you know the solution. Keep in mind that the original Wordle used a list of approximately 2,300 solution words, but since it was purchased by the New York Times, the number of solution words has grown, and the words may be less common or more obscure. Keep this in mind while playing the game.
