Double Bonus: Answer Key

For the November 26, 2023, NYT Connections, here are the answers:

What's the Yellow Word in the Puzzle?

The yellow group is considered the easiest. Today's yellow theme is "COMMUNITIES" with the words: CITY, COUNTRY, TOWN, VILLAGE.

What's the Green Word in the Puzzle?

The green group is the second easiest. The theme for this color group with words: HACK, MAUL, PULSE, PUREE.

What's the Blue Word in the Puzzle?

The blue group is the second hardest. This time, the theme featuring: CAPITAL, EQUITY, INTEREST, STOCK.

The violet group is the most challenging. Today's purple theme: LEAGUE and the words: IVY, JUSTICE, LITTLE, PREMIER.

How I Cracked the NYT Connections

"Equity" fits in with the concept of equity and justice, but can also refer to financial value. Capital, equity, interest, and stock stand in agreement with that.

As I stopped focusing on the word itself and viewed the entire panel, "puree" suddenly clicked. Just like purée, "pulse," "puree," and "grind" are settings on a blender or food processer.

"City," "City," and "Ivy" reminded me of an ivy university city. Then, I noticed the MINOR LEAGUE, JUSTICE LEAGUE, and (once I remembered Europe existed) SUPER LEAGUE on the board.

After finding some locations: CITY, COUNTY, TOWN, and VILLAGE (and their specific New York meanings), I became a connector pro!

Playing "Connected"

Look for the NYT Connections puzzle on the New York Times website or in the Crossword Puzzle App. You'll be presented with a 16-square gameboard with words or phrases. Your mission is to pick a set of four tiles that share a common theme. Typically, you're selecting words or phrases that are of the same type (e.g., rain words like RAIN, DRIP, etc.), but sometimes you'll be dealing with wordplay (e.g., BUCKET LIST, GUEST LIST, etc.).

Pick four projects and click "SEND." If you're right, facts like the category and color will be revealed. Guess incorrectly, and you can give it another shot.

If you manage to identify all four groups correctly, you score a point. But if you mistakenly solve four groups, you lose, and the solution is revealed.

Winning Connections

Connecting is all about figuring out the pattern design. Expect overlapping categories. Contemplate the six-breakfast-food puzzle, like BACON, CLOSE, WHISTLER, and WHISTLER'S MOTHER. It seems to be a group of PAINTERS, with BACON belonging to CLOSE, WHISTLER, and WHISTLER'S MOTHER. EGG adds 12 PAINTERS to the mix (EGG, JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH).

Don't click "SEND" until you're fully certain that your group consists of only those four items.

If you're stumped, here's another strategy: pick words that appear to have no connection to one another. If WISTLER only reminds you of Whistler's Mother, you'll likely hit the mark. Once this strategy came to me, I searched for the painter named "Close," as the word has no apparent connection to any fruity, olfactory, or nautical themes.
