Here's how to play "Connected":
I've written a complete guide to playing Connections, but I'll offer a brief overview here:
Find the Connections game on the New York Times website or in their Crossword App. When you're presented with a 16-square Connect board consisting of individual words or phrases, your task is to find a set of four tile connections that share something in common. This could be the same type of thing (e.g., "RAIN", "GROUP", "HAIL", and "SNOW" are all types of wet weather), or it could involve a wordplay (e.g., "BUCKET-LIST", "GUEST-LIST", and "WISH-LIST" are all types of lists).
Select four projects and click the "Submit" button. If your guess is correct, you'll receive a category and color. (Yellow is easiest, followed by green, then blue, and finally purple.) If your guess is incorrect, you'll have the chance to try again. If you guess incorrectly four times, the game is over and the answer is revealed.
HOW TO WIN CONNECTIONS
If you're focused on making connections, it's important to remember that the grouping design can be tricky. Expect some overlap. For example, a puzzle might initially appear to contain six breakfast foods: bacon, eggs, pancakes, omelets, waffles, and muesli. However, it turns out that bacon goes with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER in a group of Paintings, while eggs is part of a dozen painting-related words (JOURNEY, ROSE, MONTH). So avoid clicking "Submit" until you're certain that your set of four only includes those four things. If you can't move forward, try looking for words that appear to have no connection to other words. If the word "whistler" brings to mind a famous painting named "Whistler's Mother", you might be on the right track. As I discovered, simply searching for the name "Close" on Google led me to collage artist Quentin Close, whose work did not fit any obvious theme.
Of course, another strategy for success if you're stuck is to take a look at some helpful tips – that's why we share them every day! Check back tomorrow for the next puzzle solution!
