How I Solved Today's Connections Puzzle

Of course, I was temporarily sidetracked by TV channels. With the remote, we can switch channels or lower the volume. But I couldn't create a cohesive group, so I started with "Amount," a word that can mean "Quantity," "Count," or "Number."

Canals, straits, and canals are all water passages between land regions. I stuck with these three words, eventually realizing that "Sound" was another type of water, likened to friends on Long Island calling "Long Island Sound" a different body of water than "Ocean."

"Secret," "Hidden," and "Private" all go together and denote privacy. "Secluded" is different, but it can refer to a secluded place. I took the plunge and found out it was right.

I was about to say I didn't understand how NOON, MOW, SIS, and 96 were related, except that NOON and SIS were palindromes. Then it clicked: they looked the same from both directions.

Playing Connections

I have a complete guide to playing Connections, but let me summarize the rules here:

Find the Connections puzzle on the NYT Webpage or in the crossword app. You'll be presented with a 16-square puzzle grid, each containing a word or phrase. Your task is to choose a group of four that share something in common. Usually, this means the same type of things (like "Rain," "Snow," "Hail," and "Thunder" are all types of wet), but sometimes, wordplay is involved (like "Bucket," "Guest," "Top Ten," and "Wish" are all types of lists).

Choose four projects and hit the "Send" button. If you're correct, you'll see the category and color shown. Yellow is the easiest, followed by green, then blue, and finally violet. If your guess is wrong, you get another chance.

If you get all four groups right, you win. But if you make four mistakes before completing, the game is over, and the solution will be revealed.

Winning at Connections

If it's about making connections, keep in mind that the grouping design is tricky. Expect overlapping groups. For instance, one puzzle seems to include six breakfast foods: Bacon, Eggs, Pancakes, Omelets, Waffles, and Muesli, but it turns out "Bacon" is grouped with "CLOSE," "MUNCH," and "WHISTLER" as a group of Painters. "Egg" joined an "ODE" group (with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). So don't hit "Send" until you're sure your group consists of only these four items.

If you're stuck, try searching for words that appear to have no apparent connection to other words. When "Whistler" brought to mind the painting with the nickname "Whistler's Mother," I had my eureka moment. I eventually discovered that "Close" belonged to a group of painters as well, since the word "Close" had no obvious theme. Another winning strategy involves finding words that seem to have no connection to any obvious theme, like the word "Close." Try Google looking for a painter named "Close," and you'll likely find your way to success!
