How did I solve today's Connections?
Scat caught my eye first. It evidently works with SING, HUM, and WHISTLE. (Maybe I got lucky!)
Next, I pondered TOTAL. It could be COUNT, SUM, GROSS (in a business context).
What about Gummi, Kleber, and Klebeband? They're all sticky, but I had no fourth item to utilize. That is, unless… YES, OH BOY, PLEASE.
Was else is left? Rum, Limette, Minze, and Sodawasser. Here's the cocktail recipe.
And finally, Gummi, Kleber, Klebeband, and Stick. Some sticky stuff. Boohoo.
Playing Connection
I have a full-out Connections guide, but here's a summary of the rules:
- Find the Connections puzzle on the New York Times website or in the Crossword app.
- You'll see a 16-by-16 grid with one word or phrase on each square. Your job is to pick four squares that form a sentence or pattern.
- Select four packages, then click "Send."
- If your guess is correct, the category or color will be revealed.
- If your guess is wrong, you'll have the chance to try again.
- If you make four errors before guessing correctly, the game is over and the answer will be revealed.
Winning Connections
If you're aiming to connect, be aware that the grouping design can be tricky. Expect some overlap. For example, the puzzle might seem to have six breakfast items: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELETTE, WAFFLES, and MUESLI. It turns out, however, that BACON belongs with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER as "Painters," ending up in a different category than EGG (alongside JUROR, ROSS, and MOON). Therefore, don't click "Send" until you're confident that your four items form an isolated group.
If you get stuck, try searching for words that seem to have no connection to others. For instance, if the phrase "Whistler" brings to mind only the painting "Whistler's Mother," you might be on the right track. As I discovered, searching for a painter named Close served me well, as nothing about "Close" seemed to fit any apparent theme. Another trick to success if you get stuck is simply to explore helpful tips – which is why we provide them daily! Just stop by tomorrow for tomorrow's puzzle!
