Award-Winning Rigoletto Mesmerizes With Innovative Puppetry and Technology

Step into a world where puppets dance on stage, and the boundaries of performance art are pushed to their limits. That's exactly what you'll find at the 2020 Opus-winning Rigoletto. This breathtaking performance, set on the Bregenz lake stage, transformed the theater landscape, rightfully earning the Opus - German Stage Prize 2020.

The scale of the set itself is a testament to the mastery of event technology. The animatable head, weighing a whopping 35 tons, sports a removable nose. The collar, stretching over 338 square metres, is controlled by a cable pull, while the movable hands, crafted from steel, wood, and styrofoam, bring the characters to life. A captivating balloon, filled with 1300 cubic metres of helium, adds to the spectacle.

But it's not just the technical prowess that wins over audiences. Director and stage designer Philipp Stölzl's creative vision and flair are the real showstoppers. The jury was particularly impressed by the seamless integration of the opera's dramatic narrative.

Rigoletto presents a technical challenge that complements its artistic intent. This ambitious project has been in the works for three years, with 46 technical companies from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria contributing to the stage construction alone, which took an impressive 10 months. The result is an unforgettable experience that left audiences in awe in its first season on the Bregenz lake stage. The production will continue to captivate audiences starting from 23 July 2020.

The Opus award is an integral part of the Prolight + Sound trade fair for event technology, recognizing outstanding artistic achievements in the use of technology for theater productions, concerts, and other events. The jury consists of members from the Association for Media and Event Technology (VPLT), the European Association of Event Centres, industry experts, representatives of the trade press, and Messe Frankfurt. The awards ceremony takes place on 2 April at a festive evening event at Prolight + Sound.

While specific details about the 2020 Opus-winning Rigoletto production remain scarce, it's not uncommon for opera productions to incorporate innovative elements such as puppetry, technology, and avant-garde staging. These elements aim to engage audiences more deeply and attract newcomers to the opera world. If you're interested in learning more about a specific production, checking the official websites of opera houses or opera news outlets may provide additional insights.

At the 2020 Opus-winning Rigoletto event, technology is spectacularly used to bring life to animatable puppets, immersing audiences in a unique kind of entertainment that blends puppetry and music. The integrated use of sophisticated event technology not only adds to the opera's artistic appeal but also serves as an attractive gateway for newcomers to the opera world.
