"Prince's Vocalist Unveils Fresh Musical Narrative: Honecker and the Queen" - Title: Musical Composition by Prince Singer: Honecker & The Queen
Tobias Künzel, the talented musician from the band Prinzen, has dived headfirst into his love for musicals, joining forces with Mark Underwood, a brilliant British wordsmith. Their new creation, titled "Death On The Throne - The Loosical" for its English debut, will splash onto the London stage in late March, followed by the German premiere in Halle in June. This is Künzel's sixth impressive musical concoction.
His fascination with the musical genre dates back to his childhood, when he was a choirboy in the Thomanerchor, getting acquainted with works of the Passion story like the Johannes and Matthäus Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach. The arrival of "Jesus Christ Superstar," the captivating rock opera tackling the same theme but bursting with rock music, fueled his desire to create something equally electrifying.
A Melange of Icons in One Musical
In "Tod auf dem Thron", Künzel and Underwood conjure up a peculiar assembly of famous historical and cultural icons. Expect Queen Elisabeth, Margaret Thatcher, Elvis, and "Ostalgie" mascot Erich Honecker, all gracing the stage. This dynamic drama will unfold through the performances of two actors, four puppeteers, and a live band.
The musical was initially penned in English, making its translation into German a necessary challenge. As Künzel explains, "I collaborated with Michal Kuhn, an exceptionally gifted young comedy virtuoso, to tackle the momentous task of finding equivalent German humor. We discovered that most English wordplay and double meanings fail to catalyze laughter in German and had to fabricate new ones to sustain the hilarity." For the German audience, he promises to bring English humor home in its native tongue.
