Thrilling Finale Ahead in Biathlon World Cup: Preuß Braces for Closest Rival in Yellow Jersey Race

Take a seat, biathlon fans, because we're in for a nail-biting ending. Franziska Preuß, the German powerhouse, lost a significant chunk of points to her closest competitor, Lou Jeanmonnot, in the mass start race on Pokljuka. The overall World Cup title could very well be decided in the season's final race.

Preuß gave it her all, even congratulating her winning rival jeeringly through the ZDF microphone. A fumble in the final shooting setback the 31-year-old's bid for the coveted yellow jersey. After the mass start over 12.5 km, Preuß slid from a commanding 60 points lead to a slim 20 points advantage over Jeanmonnot ahead of the Holmenkollen World Cup finale.

"It was one heck of a race," said Preuß, visibly frustrated about her shooting gaffe. "I'm a bit bummed about that last mistake." Despite the setback, she remains "definitely satisfied" with her fifth-place finish.

"No regrets"

This narrows the gap, but Preuß is still maintaining the lead for the yellow jersey - a lead that Jeanmonnot herself acknowledges won't be easily taken. "I can't beat myself up too much over it," explains Preuß. "I've still got a bit of an edge."

Preuß takes that edge to the Oslo World Cup final, with the sprint, pursuit, and another mass start still on the table. "We're both having fantastic seasons," says the overall World Cup leader. "No matter how it ends, we can both take pride in our accomplishments." Preuß just wants to "give it her all" - she can't do any more. She also heads into the final race with a 41-point advantage in the mass start rankings.

Grotian valiantly battles back

Selina Grotian, the other DSV athlete in the field besides Preuß, trailed initially after two shooting errors. The 20-year-old managed to fight her way to a credible tenth place (3 penalty laps/+1:08.5 minutes). Apart from the dominant Jeanmonnot (1), the surprising Bulgarian Milena Todorowa (0 penalty laps/+16.4) and local heroine Anamarija Lampic (1/+22.8) claimed the remaining spots on the podium.

Norwegian Johannes Thingnes Bø, a strong contender, will be absent from the 3:45 PM Slovenian mass start, as he takes a temporary leave due to illness. The single mixed (12:05 PM) and mixed relay (2:50 PM, both on ZDF and Eurosport) will wrap up the competitions on Pokljuka before we head on to Norway[1][5].
