Canadian Open Semifinals Set for Wednesday

The Canadian Open, also known as the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers, is gearing up for an exciting semifinal day on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. The tournament, held in Toronto on outdoor hard courts from July 27 to August 7, 2025, has seen some thrilling matches so far, with the semifinals promising more of the same.

In the men's singles semifinals, Alexander Zverev will face Karen Khachanov, while Taylor Fritz will square off against Ben Shelton. Fritz, the American second seed, has already secured a win in the tournament, defeating Gabriel Diallo in a close match. Shelton, the fourth seed, showed perseverance in his win against countryman Brandon Nakashima, a match that featured many huge moments.

Shelton will next face Italian 13th seed Flavio Cobolli, who has yet to reveal his form in the tournament. Fritz, on the other hand, is eyeing a third title of the season after triumphs in Eastbourne and Stuttgart. He expressed satisfaction with his baseline play, even in games where his serve wasn't at its best.

In the women's semifinals, Elena Rybakina will face Victoria Mboko, while a four-time Major champion will take on Clara Tauson. An unexpected development in the women's draw saw Anastasija Sevastova, ranked 386, defeating Jessica Pegula, the defending champion, in the Canadian Open. Sevastova will next face Naomi Osaka in the fourth round.

Osaka, a six-times major winner, has already eliminated Jelena Ostapenko in the third round. Another notable win in the women's draw came from Amanda Anisimova, seeded fifth, who defeated Emma Raducanu. Anisimova will face Elina Svitolina in the next round.

The women's doubles final is also scheduled for Wednesday, with Taylor Townsend/Zhang Shuai facing Coco Gauff/McCartney Kessler.

The Canadian Open is part of the ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 circuits, with over $9 million in prize money. Matches are played at Sobeys Stadium in North York, Toronto. Some top players like Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Jack Draper withdrew, leaving the draw more open.

The tournament aligns closer to a Grand Slam format with a 96-player singles draw and 32 doubles teams. The singles final and doubles final will take place on Thursday, August 7, 2025.
