Tinubu, the President, designates 39-year-old Abdullahi Ramat as the fresh NERC CEO, simultaneously appointing two commissioners

In a recent development, President Bola Tinubu has nominated Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The nomination comes after the anticipated end of Engr. Sanusi Garba's tenure, which is set to conclude in December 2025.

Engr. Ramat, 39, is an electrical engineer and administrator, with a PhD in Strategic Management. His prior roles and positions are not extensively detailed in the available sources, but it is known that he has served as executive director (generation) at the Niger Delta Power Holding Co. Ltd (NDPHC).

The nomination of Engr. Ramat is subject to Senate confirmation, as is the case with all NERC commissioner appointments. Meanwhile, Engr. Ramat has been directed to assume office in an acting capacity pending his screening by the Senate.

Engr. Garba, who previously held the position of NERC chairman, officially assumed duty in 2020, following his nomination by President Muhammadu Buhari. During his tenure, he served on many Federal Government Committees, including the Presidential Committee on Power Sector Reform (2007/8) and the Presidential Task Force on Power (2009/10). Before joining NERC, Garba served as the chief executive of Katsina Steel Rolling Co. Ltd and the Director (Power) in the Federal Ministry of Power.

President Tinubu has also nominated Mr. Abubakar Yusuf as Commissioner for Consumer Affairs and Dr. Fouad Olayinka Animashun as Commissioner for Finance and Management Services at the NERC. The nominees are expected to use their knowledge and experience to discharge their functions and work assiduously to advance the administration's power sector vision.

In a statement accepting his appointment, Engr. Ramat expressed gratitude, saying "Alhamdulillah. From leading just, a single Local Government Area to now being entrusted with matters concerning all the 774 Local Government Areas through NERC. Truely, God is great."

Engr. Garba first joined NERC in 2017, after being screened alongside six other commissioners on February 7, 2017. His five-year term is expected to conclude in line with the Electricity Act, 2023.

The new appointees are expected to face challenges in the power sector, as the industry continues to evolve and demand reforms. However, with their expertise and the President's support, they are poised to make significant strides in improving Nigeria's power sector.
