Tinubu, the newly elected President, establishes a Governing Council and Board of Trustees for HYREP; a comprehensive list of the appointments is provided.
President Bola Tinubu Announces New HYREP Council and Board of Trustees
President Bola Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Governing Council and Board of Trustees for the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYREP). The new appointments aim to address environmental concerns in the Niger Delta region.
The reconstituted HYREP Council, chaired by the Minister of the Environment, includes representatives from various communities and stakeholders. Gideon Onyebuwa Melfor and Dr. Ibikunle Omotehinse represent the nine oil-producing states, while Professor Barinedum Michael Nwibere and Barrister Baride Abdul Gwezia represent the Ogoni Community. Bright Onyebuchi Jacob and Henry Obiabure will advocate for the interests of Niger Delta communities, and Loanyie Barituka Victor will represent non-governmental organisations focused on the environment.
Four alternate members have been appointed to the Council, with Rev. Canon Dr Abraham Olungwe and Engr. Maeba Power Ekpobari representing Ogoniland, and Joseph Akedesuo and Beauty Warejuowei representing the Niger Delta.
In addition to the Council, the HYREP Board of Trustees has also been reconstituted. Emmanuel Nwiika Deeyah has been reappointed as chairman, with Fred Mbombo Igwe and Dr. Fred Barivule Kpakol representing Ogoni communities and stakeholders, and Dorcas Amos representing the other Niger Delta communities. Chief Jide Damazio continues to represent NGOs dealing with environmental issues.
However, there has been some controversy regarding the membership list of the Board of Trustees, with Ogoni indigenes appealing for the depoliticization of the cleanup project and respect for original appointments, specifically concerning the replacement of the original Board chairman, Dr. Mike Nwielaghi, with Emmanuel Deeyah.
Bayo Onanuga, presidential spokesperson, confirmed the appointments on Monday. The new HYREP Council and Board of Trustees are expected to work towards addressing the environmental challenges in the Niger Delta region.
